The Goochland County School Board accepted the retirement of Mr. Bryan Gordon, Athletic Director at Goochland High School, during their January 30 meeting. Mr. Gordon’s experience as a teacher, dean of students, coach, athletic director, and school board member spans 31 years in Goochland County Public Schools.
Among his accomplishments, Mr. Gordon served as head baseball and football coach at Goochland High School and was named the 2006 VHSCA State Coach of the Year in baseball, the year that Goochland High School’s baseball team won the state championship. Two current major league baseball players played for Mr. Gordon at GHS.
After a decorated career as a teacher and coach, Mr. Gordon assumed the role of athletic director at Goochland High School in 1993. He will serve in that position until his retirement is effective on July 1, 2018. Mr. Gordon was named the VIAAA State Athletic Director of the Year in 2002 and served on the Virginia HIgh School League (VHSL) Executive Committee from 2003-2006. Under his leadership, Goochland High School has achieved success with state championships in football, tennis, track, and volleyball, while growing in the fine and performing arts and academic extracurriculars.
“Mr. Gordon’s roots and influence in our entire community cannot be understated”, said Dr. Jeremy Raley, Superintendent. “His shoes will be hard to fill in every way. In his multiple roles with our school division, he has dedicated a great deal of time, effort, and energy to ensure that our students have had a positive academic and extra-curricular experience”.
Head football coach and teacher Mr. Joe Fowler agrees. “He has impacted so many lives during his many years at GHS. Whether in the classroom or in the dugout he has served as a role model for thousands of students. There are a lot of families where he has taught the parents and then 20 years later their children. His influence will continue on for many, many years”.
Mr. Gordon’s sons, Patrick and Preston, continue the family tradition as coaches and teachers in GCPS. His wife, Dianna, retired as the Director of Elementary Education after serving as principal in Goochland County Public Schools.
The recruitment and selection process for the new Goochland High director of student activities will begin this month.
