The Goochland County School Board approved the recommendation to appoint Mr. Joe Fowler, current teacher and head football coach at Goochland High School, as the new GHS Student Activities Director at their April 10th meeting. Mr. Fowler will assume the role occupied by Mr. Bryan Gordon, who announced his retirement this year. Mr. Fowler’s experience in coaching and education has spanned over 25 years, 20 of which have taken place at Goochland High School, where Mr. Fowler has been the head football coach for the past 17 years. In his tenure as head coach, Goochland won its only 2 state football championships in three appearances in the title game under Mr. Fowler’s leadership.
In addition to his success as head football coach, Mr. Fowler coached baseball and track. He was named Goochland High School Teacher of the Year for his work teaching finance and economics, and was recognized for the success of his students on the W!SE Financial Literacy assessment among comparable national schools.
Mr. Fowler has served as the assistant athletic director for the past six years, and was recognized as the VHSL Division 2 Coach of the Year in both 2016 and 2017. He has been additionally recognized by the Associated Press, Richmond Touchdown Club, district, and region as Coach of the Year during his tenure.
“We are very excited to continue to build on the tradition of athletic and extracurricular success at Goochland High School with the leadership of Mr. Fowler,” says Dr. Jeremy Raley, Superintendent of Schools. “His success as a coach and a teacher as well as his commitment to our community will make this important transition a win for Goochland”.
Mr. Fowler’s wife, Dr. Beth Fowler, serves as the Director of School Counseling at Goochland High School.
The recruitment and selection process for the new Goochland High football coach will begin this week.
